Field-Ready Pipeline Weld Inspection. Code-Fluent. Fast to Mobilize.

Pipeline weld integrity failures don’t announce themselves — they show up in hydrostatic test failures, PHMSA incident reports, and unplanned shutdowns. CWI-Grid deploys AWS Certified Welding Inspectors with hands-on API 1104, ASME B31.4, and ASME B31.8 field experience to your project. We work alongside your construction team, document every hold point, and deliver inspection records built to satisfy operators, engineers of record, and regulators.

Starting at $120/hr for standard single-inspector engagements. Field mobilization, travel, and per diem scoped separately.

What We Cover in the Field

Six inspection scopes. One field-deployed AWS CWI. Documentation your operator and regulator will accept.

API 1104 • ASME B31

Visual Weld Inspection (VT)

Code-based visual examination of completed weld joints per API 1104 acceptance criteria. We evaluate bead geometry, surface discontinuities, undercutting, overlap, and dimensional compliance — with clear accept/reject calls documented by weld ID, joint number, and photo.

  • Full-circumference examination of butt and fillet welds
  • Accept/reject calls per API 1104 Section 9 or applicable ASME B31 criteria
  • Weld map documentation with sequential joint traceability
  • Pre-NDE surface condition verification
WPS Compliance

Pre-Heat & Interpass Temperature Monitoring

Preheat and interpass temperature control is one of the most commonly skipped steps on pipeline projects — and one of the highest-risk. We monitor and document temperatures at each weld joint using calibrated contact pyrometers and infrared equipment, confirming compliance with WPS-specified requirements before and during welding.

  • Contact pyrometer and IR thermometer monitoring
  • WPS preheat and interpass temperature verification
  • Documentation of out-of-compliance conditions and corrective action
  • High-CE and cold-weather environment monitoring
API 1104 • ASME Section IX

WPS / PQR Review

Welding Procedure Specifications and Procedure Qualification Records are the foundation of pipeline weld integrity. We review your WPS/PQR package for completeness, code compliance, and field applicability — identifying gaps before they become non-conformances during construction or operator audit.

  • WPS review against API 1104 Section 5 or ASME Section IX essential variables
  • PQR test result evaluation and documentation review
  • Procedure alignment verification with field conditions (material, position, process)
  • Essential variable change identification requiring re-qualification
API 1104 Sec. 6 • ASME Section IX

Welder Qualification Oversight (WPQR)

Welder performance qualification under API 1104 or ASME Section IX requires witnessed testing, accurate documentation, and proper coupon traceability. We manage the qualification process from fit-up through test result documentation — ensuring your welder roster is code-compliant and defensible under operator or regulatory review.

  • Witnessed performance qualification testing per API 1104 Section 6 or ASME Section IX
  • Coupon identification, position, and process documentation
  • Destructive test result review (bend, nick-break, tensile)
  • Continuity and expiration tracking support
Pre-Weld

Fit-Up Inspection

Weld quality starts before the arc strikes. We inspect joint fit-up for dimensional compliance, alignment, bevel geometry, land dimension, and root opening — catching conditions that produce rejectable welds before they require costly repair or cut-out.

  • Pipe end preparation and bevel angle verification
  • Internal lineup clamp position and root opening inspection
  • Hi-lo (offset) measurement and documentation
  • Joint cleanliness and pre-weld condition confirmation
RT • UT • PAUT • MT

NDE Coordination

We coordinate nondestructive examination subcontractors — radiographic (RT), ultrasonic (UT/PAUT), and magnetic particle (MT) — ensuring coverage aligns with your inspection and test plan, hold points are properly sequenced, and NDE results are reviewed against applicable acceptance criteria before the project advances.

  • RT, UT, PAUT, and MT subcontractor coordination
  • NDE coverage verification against ITP hold points
  • Film and digital radiograph review per API 1104 or ASME acceptance criteria
  • Defect disposition documentation and repair follow-up inspection

Pipeline Projects We Support

From cross-country transmission to in-service integrity programs — if it requires a qualified CWI on the line, we can be there.

Cross-Country Transmission Pipelines Liquid and gas transmission line construction, tie-ins, and hot-tap inspections under API 1104 and ASME B31.4/B31.8.
Gas Distribution Systems Distribution main and service line inspection for gas utilities operating under ASME B31.8 and DOT/PHMSA 49 CFR Part 192.
Midstream Gathering Lines Crude oil, condensate, and natural gas gathering system construction inspection in production areas.
Pipeline Integrity Programs In-service inspection support, anomaly repair verification, and re-inspection following inline inspection (ILI) findings.
Compressor & Pump Station Piping Station facility piping inspection per ASME B31.4/B31.8 for new construction and turnaround scopes.
Tie-Ins & Hot Taps High-consequence, zero-defect weld inspection for in-service connections and pressure boundary work where rework is not an option.

Codes & Standards Include

Our inspectors work to the standards your project specifies — not a subset of them.

Code / Standard Scope
API 1104 Welding of Pipelines and Related Facilities — primary pipeline weld inspection standard for construction and in-service work
ASME B31.4 Pipeline Transportation Systems for Liquids and Slurries
ASME B31.8 Gas Transmission and Distribution Piping Systems
ASME Section IX Welding and Brazing Qualifications — WPS/PQR and welder performance qualification
ASME Section V Nondestructive Examination — NDE procedure and method requirements
AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welding — applicable to facility structural attachments and supports
DOT 49 CFR Part 192 Transportation of Natural and Other Gas by Pipeline
